Youth
Hostels are our Primary Program, providing opportunities for youth
organizations and individuals, to have safe, fun affordable experiences
in Pennsylvania State Parks and rural settings. The Youth Hostels
and our Travel Center offer additional educational programming, to
assist with facilitating cultural exchange endeavors. We welcome
and encourage organizations and individuals to take advantage of these
wonderful opportunities for cultural enrichment!
Underground Railroad Tours Yes-we have hostel that is a documented stop on the Underground Railroad. It also sits right on the Appalachian Trail. We give tours of the actual hiding spaces and brief lecture on the history of the Railroad, the important role Pennsylvania played in this historical network. We have also established a small library on the subject at the hostel. Tours are given to groups and individuals, upon request. Advance notice is required. If you have hostelled abroad but are not familiar with the hostel program in your region, this is a great way to get involved. This Seminar is highly recommended for group / community leaders and teachers Budget Travel 101 Planning to travel abroad or domestically? Then Know Before You Go! These Seminars are designed to assist first time and limited experience travelers with preparation for travel. We provides you with helpful information about Hostelling, reservations, safety, packing, currency, and general know before you go info. Travel & Cultural Geography Center offers reference materials, to the general public. Youth students, groups and families come and relax while flipping through tour guides, viewing maps and surfing global sites. You can also purchase memberships, rail passes and travel accessories at the center Educating Through Exposure and Experience The Hostel experience provides affordable cultural enrichment activities, educational retreats, and outdoor environmental programming for thousands of youth in our region. Ninety Percent of our Hostel Program participants are Non-Profit Youth Groups. We continue to build partnerships with community youth organizations, through our Nature and Inter-Cultural Education (NICE) program, which introduces inner-city youth organizations to the Youth Hostel Program. Providing their participants with an opportunity to have rural experiences that stimulates their senses and fosters a connection to the world beyond their neighborhood. At youth hostels, they can engage in recreational activities otherwise unavailable in an urban setting including environmental education seminars, history tours, hiking, swimming, boating, and fishing. Nature is an ideal place for leadership training, development of self-esteem, and character building. The Hostel’s communal living space allows youth to often interact with young people from around the world. |

our partnership with Pennsylvania State Parks, your organizations or
school can take advantage of a host of exciting programs that focus
on teaching youth about our environment and preservation.
We can help your youth group plan an
environmental outing and visit to a state park Hostel, utilizing the
following programs below.
Programs & Activities that can be conducted utilizing Hostels Activities for Environmental Learning (booklet) Includes various activities to develop environmental knowledge and problem-solving skills for age groups ranging from preschoolers to seniors in high school. Animal Tracks (brochure) Illustrates some of the common animal tracks found in Pennsylvania State Parks. Bugs and Galls (fact sheet) Summarizes the causes and effects of galls--growths and swellings on plants caused by insects. Eastern Bluebirds in Pennsylvania State Parks (brochure) Discusses the Pennsylvania Bluebird Trails Program and provide nesting box instructions. Natural Symbols (brochure) Informs readers of the statewide natural symbols of Pennsylvania including the state flower, tree, mammal, fish, bird and insect. Watershed Education (brochure) Informs readers on the PA Bureau of State Parks’ Watershed Education program for educators and students in grades 6-12. Direction on how to get involved is included. Youth Environmental Learning Series (brochure) Discusses the four programs that comprise the Youth Environmental Learning Series for children ages 4-17.
